On Sunday, I was dusting, cleaning and doing the things one does to prepare for the Holidays. In the midst of the activity, I noticed my Peace Lily looked a bit listless. I stopped and tended to it questioning it what was wrong.

Side note: I do not have the greenest thumb on the planet. I previous times I would joke I had a black thumb...

I felt bunching. I felt the roots were packed too tightly and that when I re-potted it about a month ago, I did not loosen the roots enough. I began pulling out brown leaves and stems and seeing my plant well; its leaves buoyed and refreshed. I watered it again. I removed un-grounded pieces that were not thriving and came out of the dirt easily. I dumped the stinky stagnant water that had collected in the catch tray. I lightly watered the plant with fresh water. Moved it closer to the window, to the light, since the sun's rays were now no longer as strong nor available for so many hours (I'm in the northern part of the United States). Then, I left it be.

A few hours later, I came back and emptied the catch tray again. There was more water that had fallen through but this time the water was not foul smelling. The leaves had lifted and were angling towards the light. My Peace Lily felt happier and healthier. I left her in the new place close to the window and walked away humming.

What does this gardening story have to do with anything? Simply this. There are times when we have to refresh ourselves. To remove the muck we pick up from our everyday dealings in life and dump out the morass. Clean ourselves with fresh water (yes, a shower not because we're physically dirty, but to clean ourselves spiritually). Then, still give ourselves another cleanse.

Unlike the plant, our second cleanse should be with something that will remove the things regular water does not easily remove. We can clean ourselves with water with a bit of Florida water in it, a teaspoon of table salt, or Kosher salt, and three dashes of black pepper. Swirl this together with your hand and say a prayer over it to infuse this spiritual bath with positive energy. Now pour this bath over yourself making sure you get your feet and your hands well cleansed. [If you do not want to muss your hair, pat your crown chakra and your third eye with the bath on your hands to cleanse those key areas as well.]

Keeping ourselves clean is one the most basic yet most important thing we can do to keep ourselves open to new things, new opportunities, and new growth in our lives.

Wishing you a powerful rest of the day!
